The actual article: "Romney, Ryan love North Face. Founder finds it 'ironic'" seems to indicate that there is no actual connection between the candidates and VF Corporation. I was unable to check anyone other than the CEO, who is currently Eric C. Wiseman, FWIW. Apparently, the company is concerned that the appearance by Romney/Ryan may have caused a dip in sales, though they were perhaps being overly aggressive in their prognostications for the company.
The founder of The North Face, acc. to the article, thought that since the company had originated with a corporate face that was somewhat "hippie-like", the irony of these two wearing their "gear" was strong.
There is a (only mildly) humourous connection, in that the current controlling company's original name was "Reading Glove and Mitten Manufacturing Company". They later changed their name to Vanity Fair Mills, and then to VF Corporation. Another article about the same thing: "Romney likes The North Face. Investors? Not so much."

The biggest joke in that picture is the sign on the podium.

Not usually a big "meme" fan, but that Willy Wonka one is hilarious!!
As for why they wear North Face? I heard Ryan has a sponsorship with the brand after peak bagging Everest on a 12 hour day hike, with no oxygen.

So a question for those more "in the know" than has been revealed to myself?
Does that GoreTex laminate count as a "mixed thread"? And as I'm almost certain it does do private citizens have to take it upon themselves to do the executing or can we just make the case to the Secret Service and have them carry out the biblical mandate?
Is there an on-line form we can fill out? Maybe I'll check Mourdock's webpages for a link... .

The only folks I generally see wearing NF are college students....most of which are not really outdoor folks
And both of these guys went to college
So.....move along

So.....move along C'mon Babster, don't play dumb. NF wasn't the phenomenon its become with fashion concious college students until very recently, and it's been a while since those two were taking classes. And besides, they couldn't afford some new threads since then?
I heard Ryan wears North Face gear to his P90X sessions, at which point he changes into some very chic LuLu Lemon gear, then works up a good sweat to Rage Against the Machine and some bands who made appearances at Woodstock (the original one). Then he heads home in his foreign made vehicle, laughing at the homeless he sees along the way. "Take that to the bank!!!", he says as he flips his middle finger to the guy living in the cardboard box, "Take THAT to the bank."
