The extent of the damage, requiring reconstructive surgery, should ramp up the charges I would hope after some consideration.
Hope the woman dodges permanent brain damage, that sort of beating about the skull can have long term nasty consequences.

(Can't do that at the state level, because Alabama's hate crime statute doesn't cover affectional orientation.) Even in the absence of 'hate crime', assault and battery potentially carries potentially LOOOONG prison terms, no?
