So, the entire story talks about other people and ends saying that Obama filled a State Senate seat left empty by Palmer who'd gone for a federal seat.  And that's the big "revealing" story about Obama's past?  Did I miss something?

I'm with Ben.  Yawn.

Bill I kind of got to agree with the other fellows......not with the name calling and insulting but that it's really a non issue at this point.

Just one thing though....how do you vote present 130 times?

Do you figure he didn't know, or he didn't care?  Not that it matters at this point but I'd sure like to hear the explanation.

Can you be a great leader if you have no opinion and thus don't vote?

Just one thing though....how do you vote present 130 times?
For the 3 zillionth time:
FIRST: Note the date on this particular article:
January 25, 2008

SECOND: This has been public knowledge for anyone who wanted to know for a very, very long time. How could someone not know? How could anyone possibly not know at this point in time, after all the discussions and articles that have been written about this? Is it possible you live in a cave in the Gobi desert?

All I did was Google “voting 'present' in illinois”, and the article quoted and cited below is the very first one returned.

Please read this – or, at least, the last 3 paragraphs (if you can) - and perhaps you will, henceforth, become less unattractively partisan in your comments, at least about this particular issue.
QUOTE
In most legislatures, lawmakers vote either "yes" or "no" on bills, but in Illinois, senators and representatives can hit a third button for a "present" vote. Now that quirk - not unique to Illinois - has sparked heated exchanges among Democrats vying for president.

The two main rivals of Illinois' U.S. Sen. Barack Obama for the Democratic nomination accused him during a debate Monday (Jan. 21) of ducking important votes by voting "present" about 130 times during his eight years in the Illinois Senate.

But Obama's former colleagues who still serve in the Illinois Capitol say that the attacks are off-base and that either Obama's opponents don't understand how things work in Springfield or they are deliberately distorting his record.

"To insinuate the 'present' vote means you're indecisive, that you don't have the courage to hold public office, that's a stretch. But, it's good politics," said state Rep. Bill Black ®, a 22-year veteran of the House and his party's floor leader.

In fact, he said, Illinois legislators get attacked for their "present" votes nearly every campaign season. "It's always been a campaign gimmick, really. If you vote 'present' once in 23 years, somebody will bring it up."

The "present" vote in Illinois is sometimes cast by state lawmakers with a conflict of interest who would rather not weigh in on an issue. Other times, members use the option to object to certain parts of a bill, even though they may agree with its overall purpose.

"The 'present' vote is used, especially by more thoughtful legislators, not as a means of avoiding taking a position on an issue, but as a means of signaling concerns about an issue," said state Rep. John Fritchey (D), an Obama supporter.

The Land of Lincoln isn't the only state where lawmakers can register their displeasure without actually voting against a bill. Colorado, Delaware, Massachusetts, Missouri and Texas also allow "present" votes or similar options in at least one chamber, according to a recent review of chamber rules by the National Conference of State Legislatures.
[my emphasis]
http://www.pewstates.org/project....9387442

P.S.: I know you know better, or you were simply throwing out another of your "partisan jabs" just for grins - but really...

And you achieved what was probably your goal anyway: you got me to post to a thread by BillBab, one of the more virulently partisan hacks on this website. When BillBab posts, the rest of us should simply pretend we don't see it and "move on", because you know it's going to be something ridiculous. But the lure of the "easy mark" is undeniable, just as your comment, after all these many years, is so obscenely stupid that I should not have risen to the bait - but that's what you do.

I still admire the fact that you came back to take your beating after the election to which you'd repeatedly pointed for 2-3 years, though I seriously do not know whether that was courage (which I'd like to think it is) - or just a total lack of pride or guilt about your positions on issues - a characteristic which seems to be rampant in the right's ranks.

Gabby, my position hasn't changed but at this point I'm a little more willing to compromise.

It doesn't look like that's going to happen in DC though.

Compromise requires both sides working together.

Its a stalemate at this point IMO, and gridlock for at least two more years.

The article is adnmiitedly only applicable in terms of his political past, as in where he comes from as a politician....which is all that he is.

The title of my post was somewhat tongue in cheek...thanks to those that managed to be adults while pointing out how far I stretched the point.

As for the rest....my expectations remain so low that they cannot dissapoint me

Obama  and most of his cabinet (past and present) come from the Chicago machine that manages to tax and spend the state into certain doom and yet always manages to get re-elected....even when under indictment.

Sometimes even after conviction

The democrat controlled political machine that creates a huge pension crisis and then merely talks about fixing it ....someday

The same machine that raises taxes (on everyone) 60% and cannot figure out where all the extra money went

Because Illinois is far from a swing state we were spared a lot of the negative ads from the Obama campaign, but the local scene was just as nasty.

I did not hear anyone openly refer to their oponent as a bull$hitter....so perhaps there is some more class at the state level.

Illinois....and the rest of the country....getting the government they deserve

I guess you don't know me so you don't realize that it was a tongue in cheek post.  I proudly voted for Obama and even did some phone banking for him.  I absolutely agree that it was a victory for the people against the plutocrats.

I really don't think it matters at the moment what the right says against him right now.  Most folks have shown that they are wise to the absurd charges.

The right knows no bounds in its hypocrisy but it is reaching a desperate shrill that is unusual.  I was attempting a parody of that...

Yeah, I kinda thought it was "tongue in cheek", but I'm way too literal most times for that kind of stuff most of the time.

In addition, it's hard as hell to get "tone" over with mere text - that's why we all need to read and write more - there are writers out there with great command of those aspects of the language, and I, for one, spend a good deal of my reading time trying to figure out how they do that. I find it interesting, but some aspect of my own personality makes it virtually impossible to see matters of literary tone without very, very heavy cues.

Perhaps all us "amateurs" should adopt the methods of a few people I've seen around here, who use "pseudo markup language" to indicate areas that have hard-to-identify tone and meaning - like <irony>text text text</irony>. But then, that would probably train us to expect such markers, making us even less aware.
