The prospect of a renewed assault weapons ban in the wake of the Connecticut school massacre has set of a round of buying, as thousands of Americans head to their local gun store to secure the popular AR-15 -- the model used by the school gunman -- before potential government prohibitions on their purchase.

AR-15,s upper receiver groups, magazines.....all out of stock everywhere
A very good investment...I am thinking of taking out a 401K loan if I can find some to buy.

Unfortunately, this is why an assault weapon ban will never really work.
Americans have been conditioned to see that supposedly innocent laws, like the seizure laws designed to seize the profits from drug dealers, seem to always get corrupted by police. Police now routinely seize "large amounts of cash" ( anything over $100 is now considered a large amount of cash by the courts - inflation ) from out-of-state travelers during random traffic stops.
From Policing For Profit: QUOTE Bates said that he was right to take the money because “he couldn’t prove it was legitimate.” That of course flips the normal presumption under criminal law, but it is an example of how police powers have increased in this country.
So why should gun owners trust that this proposed assault weapon ban won't be expanded by police so that the definition of "assault weapon" includes your grandfather's old double barreled hunting shotgun?
The history of gun laws in the US has been just that. Well-meaning, common sense, regulations end up being perverted to snare the unsuspecting.
So just the TALK of an assault weapon ban has people running to gun stores. They have seen what REALLY happens.
And IF the assault weapon ban becomes law, there will be plenty of assault guns smuggled into the US along with illegal guns. The same people who are rushing to buy guns now will provide a market for drug smugglers/gun smugglers.
Law abiding gun owners are right to be wary. They know that the REAL agenda is harass them and make it impossible, or at least very difficult, for them to enjoy their shooting sport.

Yes, it's the gun and ammo dealers that always seem to profit from tragedy and fear.

The good news there is that most of the buyers are paranoid gun nuts who already have a closet full of guns.
But it does emphasize to what an extreme extent America is a culture of violence.
At least the killing of 20 first graders has managed to shut up the NRA for the moment. They have to rely upon their well trained, brainwashed members to carry the message until this latest atrocity dies down somewhat before beginning to lobby in public again.
I am sure they are trying to hold Congress Critters feet to the fire in private though.
It must hurt to see some of their A+ Critters on TV calling for gun control, neh?

People buying guns out of fear. More afraid people with guns equals more stupidity, paranoia and most likely more gun deaths

So we can safely say this is more blood on conservative hands after the let the last ban expire.
No, really, they are good god-fearing people.

I just wish they were less god fearing and more involved with long term survival of the species, under the laws of the universe.
But, then, evolution has always been a very messy process.

I only own a couple of hunting shotguns right now, but I just ordered two Bushmaster rifles today just like the ones used in Sandy hook with 5 magazines. Nice try! That that Tuffy - makes you a pretty sad individual. I have nothing but pity for you in what must be a sad little life.
Of course it's probably not true - and designed to get a reaction, either way the same applies.

Well, good luck.
Hope your kid who is fed up with living in a culture of violence doesn't decide to shoot you in the head while you are sleeping, with one of your Bushmasters!
Although, that might improve the gene pool.

Perhaps I'm missing something here. Educate me oh wise one.

This is the thing Tuffy - you come on this site spouting off that you're gonna buy a couple of Bushmasters - largely I assume to goad what you see as a few anti-gun nuts - and all you do is make yourself look like an idiot and provide a prime case as to why we should have tighter restrictions. People like you are the problem and the exact reason why responsible gun owner and assault rifle ownership are mutually exclusive terms.

Thanks, and I hope you and your family isn't set upon by armed thugs while your out buying christmas presents while your strolling around feeling good being disarmed. Or while your children are "safe" in school, or watching a movie in the mall, or hiking on a trail, or attending court or trying to calm to arguing "friends" and on and on and on and on.
You sound like the type that will just accept the fact that if you and your loved ones are injured or killed, it's "Gods plan".
