For Dems across the country, if you don't know MD Governor Martin O'Malley, you need to familiarize yourself with him. To say he's ambitious is a gross understatement. He WILL be running for President in 2016 and is currently positioning himself by apparently setting up to the left of the field. Here's a story from the Washington Post today about his take on gun control.

Although not mentioned here, he is also expected to attempt an increase in the State's gas tax this year alng with the briefly discussed death penalty repeal.
Last year he supported referendum measures to permit same sex marriage, allow for new casinos, a very heavily gerrymandered redistricting and a MD version of the Dream Act. All were succesful in November. If you don't MoM, you should.

Not sure he has what it takes on the charisma front though.

Yeah, and that's probably a better description of what I meant. I'm not sure whether he can muster the broad nation appeal for a serious run - though I could have that totally wrong. I'd say what makes him strong in locally may not play so well with a wider audience.

I am not so sure that Left of the field is the way to go, either. Lot of folks out this way are not in favor of more casinos, gerrymandering districts no matter which side is doing it, or fingerprinting prospective gun owners.
While I applaud measures that will seriously address gun control, I am not so sure where the fingerprints will help so much. Strikes me about the same as a National ID to be carried at all times. Too invasive.

I have to admit that I'm not sure that tacking to the margin is the best idea, but I'm not sure what tea leaves he's reading. He's out of office here in 2014, but the gap between 2014 and the 2016 primaries is a little muddy on how he keeps his name out there.
(Ben Cardin retires from the Senate, MoM takes his place, you heard it here first).
I see what you guys are talking about and frankly hadn't considered that much of the country might prefer a more nuianced set of positions than what he has to live with in MD. That's interesting and a good example of why I bring political stuff to this board. I don't learn much in my own echo chamber.

Unless Cardin develops health issues, I don't see him leaving his new seat before 2018.
I'm going to disagree with you Jim (surprise! ) on MoM potential. Maryland seems to create a lot of loons on both sides of the spectrum - Steele comes to mind - but they rarely manage to get play outside of the state. My guess is that MoM gets as high as the DNC and fizzles.

Here I thought this was going to be a thread about something other than guns.

In two legislative sessions he's had an amazing track record. In the three months since I wrote the original post, he got the gas tax; the death penalty repeal; driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants; medical marijuana and some of America's most restrictive gun control measures. He even got a tax on water run off that's being labeled the "rain tax". I don't know if he could govern on a national level, but he's willing to twist arms to the breaking point and he crushes dissent within his own party like nothing I've ever seen before.
As I said before, I believe 2016 is Hillary's if she wants it but if she decides not to run than MoM WILL be on every national talk show that will give him a microphone.
