Hugo Chavez wanted to stand up for his country -- to lay down terms to international oil companies -- rather than the other way around.

Not that I agree with his policies and especially some of his economic policies  -- but he was the choice of the majority of Colombians Venezuelans.  I don't subscribe to the simplistic caricature that our American government and media served up continuously.

The notion that "you are either with us or you are against us" is hogwash -- esp. coming from a country that espouses democracy and self determination -- such as our own.

Given the CIA's history of toppling democratically elected governments in Latin American countries, and the IMF's exploitive policies there, it makes complete sense, Chavez' attitude toward the US. And his ballsy comments about George Bush at the UN in New York, are timeless, and will always deserve him high fives!

+1

Regardless of what one may think of Chavez's socialist economic policies and methods to keep his grip on political power, let's remember that his popularity is rooted (at least in part) on a backlash against the long history of anti-democratic and economically oppressive policies of the United States in that region.

A good friend of mine has a loved one in Temblado right now.  She's been unable to reach him since shortly before Chavez's death was announced and says that local websites seem to be down as well as cell/ text.

Perhaps I'm being dense here...but what do you think the reasoning behind that is?  I don't think the reports I have read about his death (other than blaming it on the US) have really said anything that the inheriting regime would like to keep from it's people's eyes.

Your guess is as good as mine or hers.  Chavez was pretty well liked, so large scale unrest seems unlikely.  The fear for her is that they're rounding up foreigners for some reason.

Thanks.  She's not worried so much as prudently concerned.  Her friend is an American in a nation where that's not always a popular thing.  The strongman president is dead and comms are down.  It's not inherently dangerous as much as it's concerning...

Given that Chavez had been dying for some time -- and not suddenly -- I'd expect the Venezuelan government has process and procedures in place.  Not knowing, of course, but I'd expect your friend and her American friend will be OK.

The Pentagon sent a US veteran of the "dirty wars" in Central America to oversee sectarian police commando units in Iraq that set up secret detention and torture centres to get information from insurgents. These units conducted some of the worst acts of torture during the US occupation and accelerated the country's descent into full-scale civil war.

Hmmmmm?

But then, after several of your 'Waaaa' posts about no one wanting to discuss your topic, you still havent mentioned the 'School of the Americas' ran by us truly.

Are you saying that the SoTA makes up for the death and human suffering. Are you even aware of the number of democratically elected governments that the CIA toppled and replaced with dictators that then brutalized their people and kept them under control while US corporations exploited labor and natural resources? This is the US meme. No legitimacy.

Actually, start asking around and see how many people know about the brutality and suffering US corporate interests caused the people of Latin America. I say no legitimacy because the puppet speaks democracy, but pushes dictatorships. The dictators are installed and then their oppressive behavior is ignored as long as they are keeping things under control during the corporate exploitation process. If the dictator begins opposing US corporate interests, then suddenly the American people are "informed" of the fact that we have a dictator abusing his people, the handwringing begins followed shortly by a coup, or bombing, or invasion and more human suffering.

US foreign policy is driven by corporate interests, not by the American people's interest. It would never be your interest or my interest to overthrow a democratically elected government and replace it with a dictator.

You and I go to prison for life or receive the death penalty if we kill one person. But when the government, acting in the interest of corporations (which are people now) kill hundreds of thousands of people, it's mere policy. Americans yawn, and return to the sitcom.

Someday though, that's all going to change, but it won't be because Americans woke up and realized how terrible our "foreign policy" has been.

Hugo Chavez. RIP!!
