China has placed military forces on heightened alert in the northeastern part of the country as tensions mount on the Korean peninsula following recent threats by Pyongyang to attack, U.S. officials said.
Reports from the region reveal the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) recently increased its military posture in response to the heightened tensions, specifically North Korea's declaration of a "state of war" and threats to conduct missile attacks against the United States and South Korea.
According to the officials, the PLA has stepped up military mobilization in the border region with North Korea since mid-March, including troop movements and warplane activity.
China's navy also conducted live-firing naval drills by warships in the Yellow Sea that were set to end Monday near the Korean peninsula, in apparent support of North Korea, which was angered by ongoing U.S.-South Korean military drills that are set to continue throughout April.

Prove me wrong -- but I just can't see China letting NK shoot off a nuclear missile... no more than us ever tolerating Mexico shooting one.  In any case, if NK is acting the pest, it's good they hear it from their 'best buddy' in addition to hearing it from us.

Who can know for certain what it means. Maybe China is concerned the US is going to rattle NK's cage and they get stupid and this is a Chinese defensive move. What ever it is, it would be nice to see China keeping the peace on their own border as opposed to the US reaching halfway around the world and incerting itself for a fourth time in the region.

Imagine if Mexico surprises the world with nuclear-armed missiles aimed at Moscow!  We would not stand idly by and let Mexico bring upon retaliation / destruction right at our doorstep.

I imagine China feels the same about NK.  No way China will want a war right at its doorstep either.

Sure, the trade harrassment China is pulling and whatever backdoor stuff all would be to keep the lid on, but miltary mobilization means military intervention and I just don't see China invading North Korea. While China backing North Korea militarily has precedent. And the PLA killed a lot of Americans (and others) in the process.

Or are you also interpreting the movement of various United States military assets into the region as the United States threatening South Korea to keep it in line?

Exactly!  And the condition that called for Chinese intervention is still in place -- namely, if NK falls, then American troops may pull right up to China's doorstep.  That is anathema to China.

Thus, I expect China will do everything it can to keep NK at bay. China's focus is still on its economy.  It will not let NK provoke SK or US into a war -- and ruining China's own prospects for continued economic (and military) growth.

The US is the world's sole superpower for the foreseeable future.  China needs time -- and lots of it.  The country best able to upset China's grand plan to be a first rate country again -- is NK.

So based on that precedent were North Korea to engage in a war with South Korea and it's ally, the United States: China goes to war against the United States, just like it has before.

Exactly!

Yes.  And with the prospect of going to war again with the US -- you can just see the Chinese leadership pounding on the phone with Kim what's his name -- "don't even think about doing anything stupid".

Rounding back to OP -- China has a lot of incentives not to let NK drag it into a war with the world's sole superpower.  So, we can sit back a bit and let China rein in its pesky little "ally".

Uh, the title, 6 words, says a lot about what I think. It's China's border neighbour, let them deal with the problem.

Perhaps we'd be better off if China did to NK what it did to Tibet. I think Ben is on target in that China has a lot more to lose than NK and when you have something to lose you often act a little more cautiously.

I think they would have absorbed NK a long time ago, if they felt like that was in their best interest. NK is pretty much a global liability. China won't do anything more than it has to, but that doesn't mean that they won't defend them.

There is no reason for China to annex NK.  The economy is in shambles, it would be a liability in every sense.  They also serve the important political role of "makes us look reasonable".  China can never be accused of being the crazy kid in the neighborhood as long as NK is independent and trying to pick a fight with anyone that will listen to them.

This is true. And it's very unfortunate that twenty five million N. Koreans are just trying to put rice in their bowls every day. Like they need the few hundred or thousand (however many people control it) to be adding jeopardy to their lives.
