Support Al Qaeda ?

Rs want us in, why even Reagan did not charge into Lebanon?

I just can't see us involved with another Muslim mess, they will just blame us no matter what happens.

... but ... but when Assad kills his own people with biochem weapons (aka WMD) they are more dead than when he kills them with bullets and bombs, so we HAVE NO CHOICE but to intervene!!!

To answer the rhetorical question in the subject line, obviously we have learned something from Iraq--or at least, this administration has learned something from Iraq--because we haven't invaded Syria. (The Republicans...well, many of them obviously learned nothing.) They aren't treating claims of chemical weapons use, or inconclusive evidence of chemical weapons use, as proof of chemical weapons use--as the Bush administration did in Iraq.

Nor is anyone in the administration even talking about the possibility of unilateral action (a la Iraq); there might end up being some international military action (and we can certainly debate the wisdom of that), but that's still fundamentally different from what we did in Iraq.

Snark aside, there is a very real legal distinction there, and there has been since 1925.

If we do get involved, it will have absolutely nothing to do with biological weapons, or genocide or human rights.

It's oil, and politics, and money that matters.

LB,

If we got involved in Syria it would not be for oil:

NOT TRUE!!!

Our defense industry cannot hope to continue raking in profits if we don't keep using our weapon stockpiles!  And for Republicans to take industry contribution without working hard for its well being -- well, that is just downright irresponsible!  :;):

As for the American people -- whose support our political leadership still needs...

OP asked, "did we learn anything from Iraq"?

My question, "how come we learned so little from Vietnam that another 6,000 young American men and women had to die"?  ???

The paradox that I find ironic, is the rabid support for attacking Syria coming from the religious right who believe that we have a "Christian" obligation to defend Israel, because they are God's chosen people. Yet these same people believe that God will condemn Jews to hell if they don't accept Jesus Christ as their savior and get baptized. I think that we should stay out of it, until God's wishes are a little clearer to everyone involved.
