How much do we care about human rights, freedom, democracy and the rule of law?  Ours is a great country that purports to uphold these ideals.  It is obscene that our political leadership (presently and the immediate past) has trashed them!!

This isn't from some left wing, self-hate extremist organization. The source is mainstream CNN.  Read and see the video HERE.

Funny since it the "rule of law" that's preventing those people being transferred.

Congressional legislation written so tightly it's just about impossible to release anyone.

OK, how would you remedy the situation Ben?

I think we can all agree that Bush & Co. had painted us into a tight corner by taking dubious, legal expediencies that run counter to the spirit of human rights, domestic law, Geneva Convention, and all that?  But anyway...

Our current situation:

1.   We know we can't force feed them forever.
2.   We know we can't keep them forever.
3.   We know there will be risks in letting them all go.

So, a pragmatic way out is controlled release -- say 10 or 20 a month -- or some reasonable number and time period -- so we can reasonably track them for some reasonable amount of time.

Beyond that, sure some might turn their anger right back at us (can we blame them?) -- but then, we already have all kinds of controls to protect us from the thousands and thousands of fanatics out there... so another 148 (or whatever) shouldn't be anything that we can't handle.

No, it's not all under the president's control -- but it seems Guantanamo has been languishing at a low to medium priority in both houses of Congress as well.  Guantanamo needs to close within a reasonable time frame -- and our political leadership can certainly work together to make that happen -- without undue risk to our security.  My two cents.

How long is that?  And what happens after?

We could give them a 3-day head start before we set off the drone.

Yep, and what do we tell China the next time they shoot at Tibetan 'terrorists'?   You know our politicians and our media can't help lecturing others...  :;):
