Somehow the phrase "responsible gun owner" doesn't apply. I mean, I mean how can you not think to check to see if there is a gun in your carry-on?

Even if she does have a Concealed Carry permit, what good would the gun do if she ever needed it when she doesn't even know that she has it on her and where it's at?

Ted Nugent's wife arrested with gun at Texas airport
Published August 30, 2013
Associated Press

The wife of rock musician Ted Nugent has been arrested after a handgun was found in her carry-on luggage at an airport security checkpoint.

Stuff like this can happen to anyone.

I am very careful about my carry on.  And I seldom, if ever buy bottled water anytime, anywhere.  But the one time I did and stuck it inside my day pack because I was of a mind to finish it up later -- and precisely because I almost never do that -- I inadvertently placed the pack on the conveyor belt -- thinking AOK -- or more likely, thinking nothing at all.

The Japanese security lady eyeing the monitor asked me if I had a bottle of water inside my pack.  Of course not, I 'never' carry bottled water.  Then, of course, they fished it right out -- and I was very, very embarrassed.   :O

Good thing they were good natured about it, cause "oops, I forgot or I didn't realize" are standard lines for smugglers -- petty or grand.

A handgun?  Much more serious issue.  But it can be caused by the same human memory lapse -- esp. if you are already tired and stressed...

Not top worry, Ted always claims he doesn't need a permit to carry a firearm because the second amendment is his permit.  Lets see how well that goes over in court.

+1 ..... Never had that happen to me - yet. Preoccupation with travel plans and the rush to get the trip started makes it easy to forget the most basic things. I've had to buy lots of stuff on the road because I forgot to pack something basic. My closet and drawers at home are full of purchases I had to make because I forgot something - underwear, shoes, socks, etc.

I travel by car a lot too. Lots of people do and could carry a gun in their luggage. So I could see how easy it would be to forget that a gun was in that bag when boarding a plane.

There are 3 airports close by me now, Miami, Ft Lauderdale, and Palm Beach.  Yesterday they reported there have been 36 arrests total at those 3 airports for the very same thing, carrying a gun in carry on luggage.  So, it is not all that uncommon, just stupid.

Speaking of idiots. Jeremy Hutchinson, a republican gun nut senator who thinks arming teachers is a god idea, shot one during a training session.

QUOTE
After the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, Hutchinson became interested in arming school personnel, he said. He was invited to attend an “active shooter” training and - using a rubber bullet-loaded pistol - he mistakenly shot a teacher who was confronting a “bad guy.”

The experience gave Hutchinson some pause, but he still supports giving schools the authority to decide how best to secure their campuses.

It's amusing to observe the strange bedfellows of wing nuts. Nugent is the epitome of what most uptight white conservatives would decry as a long haired sex craved hippie. Then it turns out he loves killing things so suddenly he's one of their favorite spokespersons.

Go to any tea party rally and you will see that the aging hippie long haired (gray hair ) guys outnumber the skinhead types. You see a lot more tee shirts than business suits.

I guess long hair is in and the skinhead look is out. That leaves the bald old white guy wearing a baseball cap.

Styles have just changed.

Pretty much. That guy's mentality is scary and even scarier is the stock pile of guns he has with that mentality. Nothing surprises me with these people at all. Although he might not be an uncommon problem it is still ridiculous. You should always know where your gun is. ALWAYS. dim wits.

More Salt Lake City Airline Passengers Caught With Guns

Airports in the South and the West, where the American gun culture is strongest, had the greatest number of guns intercepted last year, according to TSA data. Five of the 12 airports with the most guns were in Texas, and others included airports in Atlanta, Denver and Seattle.

TSA officials decline to speculate about the reasons behind the increase, but say the most common excuse from passengers is that they simply forgot they had a gun in their bag.
