Neurosurgeon Ben Carson said Obamacare is the worst thing to happen to America "since slavery" while speaking at the 2013 Values Voter Summit in Washington, D.C.

"You know Obamacare is really I think the worst thing that has happened in this nation since slavery," Carson said Friday. "And it is in a way, it is slavery in a way, because it is making all of us subservient to the government, and it was never about health care. It was about control."

Carson was recently hired by Fox News as a contributor. He served as the director of pediatric surgery at the Johns Hopkins Children's Center for 39 years.

Carson has made other shocking comments in the past, once calling white liberals "racist."

"[White liberals are] the most racist people there are," Carson said in April 2013. "You know, they put you in a little category, a little box -- you have to think this way. How could you dare come off the plantation?"

To some extent, yes.
There's something seriously wrong when elected officials pass a mandate they aren't required to participate in.
Those in power should be the first to be subject to anything they pass.

[/facepalm]

Um...you do understand, don't you, that if you get health insurance through your employer the individual mandate is entirely irrelevant?

And that members of Congress get health insurance through their employer?

And that the Federal employee health insurance system operates almost exactly like--was, in fact, a model for--the exchanges set up under the PPACA?

Seriously: what on earth are you talking about here?

ETA:

To some extent, yes.

To the extent that you think it's a bad thing? Or to the extent that you think it's actually an atrocity comparable to slavery? Worse than 100 years of systematic (post-slavery) subjugation of African-Americans? Worse than the extermination of Native Americans? Worse than the internment of Japanese-Americans? Worse than the post-WWI Red Scare, and its suspension of civil liberties?

The thing about that Carson quote is that it's so completely nutso that I'd have expected one of the liberals here to post it, to discredit opposition to the PPACA. And yet you say you agree "to some extent", which, I just have to ask: huh?

If one is looking for a prescription for hyperbole, I guess it's what the doctor has ordered.  Medicare is an actual govt program and all that info goes to the gubbmint.  Same with Social Security.  The Republican's are pressing for means testing for both, and that will require financial and probably medical data (and I agree with the R's  on this - as long as it's there in case an investment goes bad or a stripper pulls another Anna Nichole on another rich guy who ain't getting any).

Actually with all the data corporations collect on us, all the gubbmint needs to do is is subpoena or subcontract if they needed more data.

+1 on Tom about Ocare being irrelevant if you have an employer sponsored plan or if you can afford a private plan not on the exchange you like.

If fairly wealthy, a person wants a deductible but then 100% of medical expanses covered since some of these illnesses can be very expensive (the best O-care is 90% - imagine they can negotiate now in states that have less indigent, non-paying patients).  Best believe, these hospitals will be looking at your finances if you claim you can't pay..

For some reason, this doesn't occur to some out there. I think the seriously "anti-government" crew are the most likely to never consider that government is an employer too.

Strange.

So TT, take 2 related comments and split them to make them into something different. Figures.

Congress should not have "employer" insurance but rather be required to use Medicare and Medicaid.
It sits up there passing laws that the average citizen must follow while bypassing those same laws because of their position.

Sometimes, it's just impossible to deal with those who are so completely mired in their self-imposed ideological ignorance.

ETA, because the above seems "snarky", though it's not really, because this:

is so filled with misunderstanding and misapprehension it's hard to know where to start.

1) Congress is employed, as has already been explained. Members of Congress therefore, just like yourself, fulfill the requirements of the mandate.
2) Most members of Congress probably don't even qualify for the programs you mention. They're not poor enough nor old enough.

I know you are trying to use the law to punish the lawmakers here, and your comments have little to do with reality. You're just an angry, ill-informed ideologue with a chip on your shoulder. Try taking deep breaths. It sometimes helps. (I don't, however, expect miracles.)

The point is Congress should be an exception to employer provided insurance. Odds are they don't pay an employee share or even have a deductible or insurance limits.

Why an exception? Just because you wish to make them an exception? I'm sure that there are private, non-government employers out there who pay at least part of their employees' insurance. (You think? What percentage? 99%?)

Perhaps you should stick to subjects you've read books on, because it's quite obvious you know very little about the governmental issues you express your opinions on in this forum.

Well, given the hiding that MLW took on the content, I would say that it is proof that his statement about opinion pieces being valid sources is very well taken.

One of the best discussions we've had here about Obamacare and it application to Congress and their staffs, in response to the biased opinion piece.

Well don, MLW!

(Also, too: you do understand that the PPACA doesn't impose Medicare or Medicaid on anyone, don't you?)

MLW,
I understand that you don't care for our President and you don't care for much of anything that has a democrat, or liberal tinge to it.  But what do you suggest as a better option?

Healthcare is a legal right for everyone in this country.  Under the pre-ACA system those without coverage would just walk in to an emergency room for treatment and the hospital could not turn them away - by law!

So if you and others don't care for "Obamacare" (stupid name) what do you suggest as a better option?

Not entirely true for various reasons but I also don't think much of "the other side" either.

What do I suggest? Since it seems something is going to be done by the feds anyway, it doesn't really matter, but I lean towards local voluntary services rather than federally mandated.

Seriously, can we stop already with all the "worst thing/person since" slavery and Hitler BS.

MLW - how about "The path tea partiers are leading us down is the worst thing since the trail of tears."

As bad as they have been for politics/society of the last several years, equating bumps in the road of today's politics to some of the most atrocious events of of the last several centuries is sickening.
