If the Tea Party fringe in the Republican House are successful in their terrorist attack on the American economy, the damages will thousands of times worse than what ocurred on 9/11.

President Obama:

"I know you're frustrated by what you see in your nation's capital right now. But because it's easy to get lost in or give up on the political back-and-forth, I want you to remember: this is not normal. Our government is closed for the first time in 17 years. A political party is risking default for the first time since the 1700s. This is not normal. That's why we have to put a stop to it. Not only because it's dangerous, but because it saps everyone's faith in our extraordinary system of self-government. And that hurts us all."

Quote from Kevin Drum:

Except for Newt Gingrich in 1995, no one has ever shut down the government as a threat to get something they want. And except for John Boehner in 2011, nobody has ever threatened to breach the debt ceiling as a threat to get something they want. That's because it's basically nuclear chicken, threatening to destroy the economy unless you get your way. It's unthinkable. [...]

How do you get across how insurrectionary this is? Raising the debt ceiling isn't a concession from Republicans that deserves a corresponding concession from Democrats. It's the financial equivalent of a nuclear bomb: both sides will go up in smoke if it's triggered. Ditto for the government shutdown. [...]

You can't govern a country this way. You can't allow a minority party to make relentless demands not through the political system, but by threatening Armageddon if they don't get what they want. It's not what the Constitution intended; it's not something any president could countenance; and it's reckless almost beyond imagining.

And most important of all, it's not something that should get written about as if it's just a modest escalation of normal political disagreements. It's not normal

If the Democrats tried a stunt like this they would immediately be labeled as traitors by the right and Faux News.

That's not entirely true:
QUOTE
In 1879, the Democrats threatened to defund the federal government unless Republican President Rutherford B. Hayes repealed laws protecting the right of freed slaves to vote against the use of terror and violence by groups like the Ku Klux Klan. The Democrats' threats backfired, and Republicans swept to victory in election of 1880. The parallel should serve as a warning to today's conservative obstructionists that their tactics are self-defeating and illegitimate.

But of course that example just serves to illustrate your larger point, with which I agree wholeheartedly.

Thanks for the fact check, and the correction.  My bad!

Thanks also for one more excellent example of what the results will be for the Tea Hatters as a result of their attempt to extort what they cannot accomplish through legitimate means in Congress.

What a country!

I wasn't aware of that precedent myself until this morning. The parallels are so strong as to be downright eerie.

Maximum hypocrisy or idiocy?

Decisions, decisions.

I prefer option 3: dishonesty. They, by their actions, clearly distain the Constitution and long for the Founder rejected days of the Articles of Confederation.

Now Boehner can't even get the votes to pass his own Bill!

And Moody's already has the US Treaury Note on downgrade watch.

The right wing terrorists are already doing severe damage, and no end in sight.

But, you don't have to worry Jimmy.  They will still need burger flippers, even if they do cut your hourly wage.   :p

Truly a WTF moment:
"BREAKING: The House Rules Committee has postponed its hearing as support for Speaker John Boehner’s (R-Ohio) new plan appears to be in serious doubt. The hearing is a necessary first step before a vote, so a vote is now unlikely on the plan tonight.

Just prior to the postponement, the conservative outfit Heritage Action said it opposed the measure, and rank-and-file lawmakers normally supportive of leadership expressed alarm that they had shut down the government and would get nothing for it except a punitive measure hurting their own staff’s healthcare, according to GOP chiefs of staff...."

http://www.washingtonpost.com/politic....hpid=z1

Well, by now Boehner has to be truly and well sick of the teahatters and may simply be marking time until McConnell and Reid ride to his rescue with something that gives him cover, and enough moderate Republican votes to pass a bill and save everything with Pelosi's delivering of the Democratic Caucus. Not soon enough to save a delay of SS checks and perhaps Medicare vendor reimbursements for a few days, I think that timing has been lost,  but soon enough to avoid serious disruption in most seniors' lives or in our nation's healthcare delivery system.

Maybe the House gambit was Boehner's ploy to run off some clock so the Senate deal could happen cleanly.  They can't sign off on anything while there's still time left to push for a better deal, whether getting one is possible or not.

Well, it that was the intent, Boehner and Co manage the clock about like the NY Jets coach.

It's too late now, can't get it done before the deadline.  Some bills will not get paid, though still a couple of weeks before Bond payments don't get made.  A minor disaster now happening, with a major disaster in the wings.

Wait till you see the leap off the cliff in the stock markets tomorrow.

And, if we get to the point of not making SS payments next month, the effect on the American economy will be catastrophic.

What a Tea Party!

I'm sticking with this guess unless the deal blows up.

BO is right. There has been nothing 'normal' about this sequence of events.

No rationale and no reason.

Just a bunch of absolutist stomping their feet and crying little babies because they are poor losers. They lost twice to a black intellectual from Harvard and they can't stand it.

Not normal. Tea baggers need anti-anxiety medication. Modern American neo-conservatism is a mental illness.
