(CNN) -- Last Saturday, Sarah Palin stood before the huge crowd at the 2014 National Rifle Association annual meeting and condemned liberals for coddling terrorists. She loaded her speech with religious metaphors, claiming that true leaders would put "the fear of God in our enemies." She said, "They obviously have information on plots to carry out jihad. Oh, but you can't offend them, can't make them feel uncomfortable, not even a smidgen. Well, if I were in charge, they would know that waterboarding is how we baptize terrorists."
Palin's invocation of forced baptism shocked both conservatives and liberals, inspiring few defenders. Christian commentators, in particular, focused on her link between torture and baptism.

On Wednesday, the National Religious Campaign against Torture released a powerful condemnation of the speech. To Palin, the organization's executive director wrote, "Your statements play into a false narrative conveying that somehow, the conflict between the United States and the terrorist cells is a conflict between Christianity and Islam, or Islam and 'the West.' "

The group's letter to the NRA, signed by 17 faith leaders from many different religions and denominations, reads, "For Christians, baptism is a profoundly holy act. It is in stark contrast to the abhorrent act of waterboarding. Equating baptism to an act of torture like waterboarding is sacrilegious -- and particularly surprising coming from a person who prides herself on her Christian faith."

Uhhh..........
Bachman wasn't close to being one heart attack away from the White House.  Palin was, maybe that's why it's news?

And sadly, even though Palin has shown time and time again that she's a twit, there are many out there who still stand by her as a spokesperson for their opinions.

A serious answer:

It will stop being news when people on the right routinely denounce and/or distance themselves from the things that she says. As long as she is (apparently) speaking for a large number of people on the American right, then what she says will be newsworthy.

HG,

I'm confused why your subject line is "Palin alienates the far right." The article is mostly about objections raised to her speech by the National Religious Campaign Against Torture, which is not (not remotely) a right-wing organization.

The NRCAT was founded at Princeton Theological Seminary (Presbyterian) and hosted in its early years by Wesley Theological Seminary (Methodist). It is an interfaith organization with member groups from all parts of the Christian spectrum as well as Judaism, Islam, and other faiths.

Can't we just ignore this woman! I'm sitting in Wasilla right now and hope I don't run into her. Can't stand her ONE BIT. Maybe a dark room with a bottle of lube for three minutes... But more than that?

This is the link in the second paragraph that says, "Palin's invocation of forced baptism shocked both conservatives and liberals, inspiring few defenders."

Perhaps you could send that suggestion to the NRA with your membership dues.

This is just ONE of the many reasons the NRA has lost credibility with so many Americans.  When you march out the likes of Ted Nugent and Sarah Palin to support your causes...

I do find it ironic that she apparent approves of water-boarding, while he ex-running mate, whom she claimed to admire was vocally, and unequivocally AGAINST the practice.

I suspect if she actually believes this (and I'm not convinced she does) and had shared her view with McCain, she would have been crossed off the short list for VP.

Actually he isn't all that consistent. Ask him about some of Palin's positions(that if some liberal had slinger would call "socialist")
and he would sure to defend them all or close to it.

I would hope the GOP would nominate someone like her or Ted Nugent but usually when they get around to
nominating a president its someone more in line with the establishment.

Gunslinger, you are still predictable here the forum, how come you aren't in Nevada with the "real" patriots? I suppose it could be a business decision since they are well stocked on guns and ammunition, at least until any real shooting starts, or maybe you can't afford the gas to get that old truck out there. I bet they would buy those old lightbulbs that you have stockpiled, after all, you can't be a patriot unless you are needlessly wasting fuel, electricity, or federal agents.

Oh ya from that standpoint

On that note he would predictably support Glenn Beck, Michelle Bachmann, Ted Nugent, Louie Gomert ,
the welfare rancher and every right-wing yahoo out there.

That's a good question. Slinger has repeatedly stated that he should be allowed to ride his horses on national park land without having to pay a fee to do so, despite the incredible amount of damage horses do to trails. So it's not just racism that he shares with Bundy.

When this is done, I hope these militia freeloaders will be forced to pay back all the money they've cost local businesses.
