I'll be taking a trip to the National Zoo in a few weeks. I'm sure my wife will get some good shots and I'll try to post some here.

I agree...  Zoos are a rather sad place if you ask me.  The zoo here has two spotted hyenas that do nothing all day but pace.  It's really sad.  Even worse are the two grizzly bears they have.  Once one has seen them in the wild where they belong, seeing them confined to a couple thousand square feet is really sad.

No, I wouldn't.  But if I were, I think I will console myself that at least I wasn't locked up in a lab setting -- hearing the cries of others being cut up or scalded or.... in the name of science... and knowing I am next in line...

We do horrible, horrible things to animals.  And yes, we reap scientific and medical benefits too -- but I wish one day -- we could acquire sufficient info to do computer modeling / testing instead -- not unlike how we have replaced nuclear ground testing with computer simulations.

What great shots! Its almost as if the animals are posing for the picture. There seems to be so much emotion in the one with the elephant. Fantastic.

Recent visit to the National Zoo, which is one of the two closest zoos for me.

Photos

Due to limited time, I only visited selected exhibits.  So I stopped for the tigers and lions, invertebrates, reptiles and amphibians, and the elephants.  The I waited in a cumulative three lines to see the pandas.  Bao Bao was napping out of view, so I only got to see the two adults, both busily eating their bamboo.

Amazing shots! Lions and tigers are so beautiful - although they were born in captivity look really majestically and threateningly...

There was a time when a trip to the Zoo used to bother me by the end of the visit but now I see how many animals they rehab, breed and rescue so I can tolerate it a lot  more.  A lot less animals pacing also.
Best place to go if you get a new piece of camera gear.  Lots of great subjects!
Here are a couple also from the San Diego Zoo.

The eyelashes on the Secretary bird are amazing.

The Koala exhibit allows you to get at eye level or even above the animals.  I doubt I would ever get the chance to see any of them awake in the wild.  They sleep a lot.
