That's a fun place when it's not too busy.  It sure does get clogged with rock climbers, though.

Mt. Charleston is a good workout if there isn't snow yet.

Lancaster?  Devil's Punchbowl and Saddleback Butte are nice when it's not too hot out

If it were spring I'd highly recommend the CA Poppy Reserve.

Death Valley is absolutely huge - much to see and do.  I like the sand dunes and Badwater area.  The Racetrack takes a while to get to, but is very scenic.  Rhyolite is a fun ghost town.  I hope to hike Telescope Peak one day.

The only hiking I've done near Vegas was in Valley of Fire - they have some awesome petroglyphs there.

Tikaboo Peak, a couple hours north of Vegas, is the closest legal vantage point of Area 51, about 20 miles distant.  And even that trail is surveilled.

Mt. Charleston is a beautiful area and is indeed a good workout - at least from the south.  There are also some nice areas to explore on the north side of the mountain, near the Mummy, if you don't mind driving a decent dirt road for a few miles.

There's also a large mesa you can climb just above Painer's Cove on Lake Mead, just on the other side of the border.

Check out this guy's blog.  He's got good descriptions of a lot of places near Vegas, including Death Valley, and other parts of the Mojave.

Thank you for the advice! I went to Mt Charleston, Red Rock Canyon, Devils Punch Bowl and then a trail along the ocean by LA. Was all great!
