The road to Hetch Hetchy is closed due to a slide and there does not appear to be an estimated opening date. I have a Wilderness Permit for mid-June in Hetch Hetchy that I really don't want to cancel!

If anybody has updates on when the road to Hetch Hetchy might open to the public, I would really appreciate it!

Just talked with a good friend who works IT at Early Intake/Hetch Hetchy.

He said there is no good news about any early June trips out of there - not optimistic right now for opening up by then - figures late July more realistic and most probably even  later. He said you should try for another trail head.

Thank you for the info. I have a permit for another trailhead in July but I've never been to Hetch Hetchy so I thought that would be a good June trip (lower elevation). Bummer!

I'd encourage you to look into entering the Hetch Hetchy backcountry via Lake Eleanor on the NW side of the park. I think you can get permits from the Stanislaus National Forest. It's only a couple of easy days from Lake Eleanor to places like Rancheria Falls.

They used to move all the trouble bears from the Valley up to Hetch Hetchy. They often worked us over pretty good back in the day, not sure about the Hetch Hetchy bears now. It's beautiful country, and doesn't get as many visitors as other backcountry areas of the park.

You can get your permits for Lake Eleanor etc. near Groveland, at the Stanislaus NF office there...just off the highway in Buck Meadows.

There's been an update today (2/28/13) :

from their FaceBook page:
"Yosemite National Park A portion of the road washed out and we hope it will open sometime next month. The Hetch Hetchy Road is the only way into Hetch Hetchy Valley.

Great news!
I was told that a portion of the road, about 1/4 mile from the dam had given way. Interesting that the part that slid away was an old  established RR grade, and, according to my bud, is still moving.  Half of the road remains passable.
Maybe they will do a one-way fix, a guy standing around with a sign sort of thing.

A "one-way" is sort of what I suspected as well given the news in your earlier post. So they get access running and do a more permanent fix as they can.

Sure. Somebody directly asked on the park's Facebook page and a Yosemite spokesperson responded.

Their page is a great way to get a specific answer from an authoritative source I'm seeing.
