My Wife and I are going to do a Rim to Rim to Rim in mid May starting from the North Rim.  We are taking camping but not backpacking equipment.  (We are going to overnight at the South Rim in a lodge) Any suggestions for primitive camping around Zion and North Rim of the G.C. for before we do the R to R to R?  It could also be a private campground as long as I'm not going to be sandwiched between RV's.  We were going to stay in Canyon de Chelly and Monument Valley before, but decided we didn't want to do the extra driving.  We are also considering the Flagstaff area and the National monuments in that area.  So I guess basically we are looking for cheap, primitive camping around the most scenic things that can be day hiked or driven through on the drive from Phoenix to the North Rim.

Thanks!

I also posted this in Rocky Mountain and the trailhead register for more to see.

Thanks.

How about Watchman inside Zion: reservable and they have spots open... hit recreation.gov.

I've stayed there (late April), pleasant enough.

If motoring from PHX to N. Rim, Zion is out of the way, perhaps an hours drive at the closest point. Just s. of Zion is BLM land. As of 15 years back there were primo informal spots "up on the mesa", s. of Grafton and Rockville. Great views.

And, I guess I'm taking your "primitive" to mean "dispersed", not official campgrounds.

At N. Rim USFS land starts just a few miles north of park boundary, is extensive.

I googled "north rim dispersed camping" once, and entries came up. One I found most tempting was down a FS road on the "East Rim", i.e. views nearby. I have not "ground truthed" that.
