What conditions - weather, bug, numbers of people, etc - would I expect for Isle Royale in May or early June? trying to avoid the summer rush.

You will avoid the rush.  You should have most of the place to yourself. Some people love it at that time.  I heard the fishing is better.  But it will be cold.  Depending on how early you go, snow on the north slopes (that depends on the winter, too). Look for bugs and mud. Good luck.

We have gone the last 4 or 5 years the last week in May. The weather is generally variable, usually one instance of snow with a few days in the 60's.

If the Spring is rainy and warm the bugs: mosquitoes, black flies can be bothersome. A breeze helps keep them at bay. The trails are usually muddy, lots of blowdowns. Not as many people, though the numbers seem to be increasing.

Spring fishing is great, nothern, lakers are 'shallow'.

Don't expect the stores to be open or water at RH or Windigo. No showers either.
