We are planning our second trip to Isle Royale in late August. How far in advance do we need to make boat reservations traveling from Grand Portage?

Grand Portage Isle Royale (GPIR) Transportation Line says ... "We strongly recommend that you make your reservations for this boat in advance, as it tends to fill up."
2-3 months to be safe, less advance time if your schedule is flexible. Remember that July/Aug are the busiest months on Isle Royale, and reservations can fill up quickly.

Late August used to be a slowing time on the Island. Not so much anymore. We usually go up in late May and always make our reservations by March.
Are you taking the VII or the Sea Hunter?

Bob, I have taken all the boats to Isle Royale on different trips and boat tickets are not this hard to get. You are looking well in advance. Most of the boat companies are not even up and running this time of year. My guess is information on the website had not been updated since last fall. They haven't decided costs or schedules yet. But past schedules haven't changed much. So you can probably plan on that. The only thing I would caution on the Voyager, (because it doesn't run everyday) check the schedule. I thought the Sea Hunter made a trip daily.

I did a late August trip last year as well and was able to purchase tickets in July. Once you know what route you want to hike never hurts to purchase your tickets early.

QUOTE Are you taking the VII or the Sea Hunter? When I tried to make a reservation on line, nothing was available on the days we wanted and in fact, the only dates that were available were in September. When I called the number listed on the website, it said the schedule would be set in early February, so we are hoping everything isn't already booked. I will see the Grand Portage folks this weekend at Canoecopia. I will mention your experience.

We got our reservations a couple of weeks ago. They must not have had everything loaded on the website for this year when we first tried. The site seems to be working just fine now.
We are beyond excited.
