IIRC, there is a signpost outside Houghton, MI that shows the historical record snow depth for the town, and its roughly 8 ft high (or higher).

Houghton? we'll be there the weekend between xmas and new year's. Nordic Ski Club of Milw. runs bus trips to da Yoop, aka The Magic Bus. Sweet, reasonable way to get north for the weekend (usually a 3 day, 2 night schedule).

Illinois folks welcome. And we typically stop in Oshkosh to pick up our Madison contingent. Details at http://www.nordicskiclub.org. seats still open.

Keep your snow.  I moved to central CA early this year from MN.  As I've gotten older, I have been much less tolerant of ice & snow.

Another great website for snow depths. If you put the name of the town plus the state and then snow in the search box it shows a closer map with depths.

That pic is really cool. I just made it my desktop.

I have always wondered about skiing the Keweenaw. Heard some good things about Mt. Bohemia and its cool yurts. It just sounds really freakin cold.

Bumknees--where do you live?

HJ, actually Keweenaw tends to have relatively mellow "lake effect" temperatures, due to open water nearby. Not unusual for there to be a 15 degree spread in the morning lows between them and say Minocqua or Iron Mt.

I dialed up the temps for this coming Sat. per weather.com

Copper Harbor, hi 15, low 10
Minocqua    hi 3, low - 6

Also, to clarify, Nordic Ski Club of Milw. is a nordic, i.e. cross country, club. Trail systems/touring centers visited on Houghton trip mentioned would be Northern Mich. U., Swedetown, and Mahto Hiista. All have trailhead chalets, great trails.

Duluth and North are getting nailed, some places may get 3' of snow when the storm is done.

I think my dad (who is 81) wants to ski at Mt. Bohemia as he works on his bucket list. We may be there come January.

Eric,
I think you mean Michigan Technological University in Houghton :)  Fantastic trails which are getting hammered by snow this week. Also it's Maasto Hiihto in Hancock.
