Long time lurker enjoying this forum over the years, I've decided to post. I am planning my yearly pilgrimmage to Wyoming. Has anyone been up Fall Creek from the South Fork Shoshone into the Thorofare drainage? Looks like a challenging but good alternative to Deer Creek. As comparison I've recently (before the fire) been over the pass from Emerald Creek to Frontier Creek a bit further south and enjoyed that. Thanks for any insights.

I haven't been down the Southfork from Shoshone Pass in 30 years. Bliss Creek Meadows is really special, but an outfitter has had a permit there for a pretty good sized tent town.
I know the Dunoir very well. If you can route find the best walk I know of in the World ascends Austin Peak from the bonneville Pass Trailhead and then you can follow the Divide all the way to Marston Pass, Younts, Thorofare, etc. doing that and then out along Yellowstone Lake is a dream of mine.
If you decide to do something on the Southern end of the Absaroka I've got a whole lot of suggestions for you. Think cougar and Pierpont loop, so many others.
I might be able to shuttle you, you never know. If not have an awesome trip.

I've been up the Southfork numerous times, but fall creek is on I have not been up. Sounds like you have experience though. I can tell you this, don't expect a trail over the pass, but routefinding shouldn't be too hard. Also to get to the Fall Creek trail, (which really is more of a hunters trail) you have to walk past Fall Creek and head back.
You will have to cross the river at a point that a young male horsepacker drowned last year, so be aware of the hazards of that river. If flows are high don't cross there, do Deer or farther south to Marshton.
What time of year are you going and where are you from? I live pretty close to there.

Thanks for the thoughts, and apologies for the time gap in getting back.
DC – Love the South Absaroka, had to bail on a planned trip to five pockets/hidden basin last year because of a knee issue, now resolved. Hiked out of your namesake a couple of times, how much did the fires affect the area? Hiking out of Dubois is plan B this year. Hidden basin is always on my mind, I did Pierpont Pass and Cougar Pass in the 70’s on my 2nd ever backpack, I shall return. Follow your posts, would love to have a beer with you sometime and swap stories.
Wycanislatrans – read about the tragic drowning last July, terrible. We are driving in from Wisconsin the second or third week in August, flows would be lower, but always wary on fords. In previous trips we have used the trailhead on the NW side of the river (Cabin Creek I think) with the immediate ford, saves some distance. By Google I found a blog where some “raftpackers” went up Fall Creek and over the divide to raft the Thorofare, so I am guessing we will make it

Mid to late August the flows should be low enough that it won't be an issue. I wasn't sure when you were going. Time of year is critical here.
PM me if you want, be happy to meet you, maybe even hike part way in. (getting time off to do multiday trips that time of year is near impossible for me...)
Have fun, post a trip report!

I learned the hard way about trying to go too high too early.
Thanks, would be great to meet you, will PM.
And if the trip comes off, will trip report.
