The trip is too far out to be day dreaming already.... but I am.  I've had some dreams over the past month where I'm in the Winds.  So disappointed when I wake up. Anyway on to the question.

Has anyone followed the East Fork River South to the Fremont trail?  How easy is the offtrail hike?  Do you need to do any wet crossings of the river?  Is one side of the river better than the other?  I want to camp in Desolation Valley on my last night and hike the 12 miles or so out.  The mileage is doable and looks mostly down hill.  Concerned about nasty terrain or water crossings that would slow me down or wear me out.  This will be in late August.

I have Nancy Pallisters book, but there is not much about this route in it.

I knew I had seen a trip report on this before.  It just took me a while to remember where.

Too far out? Not at all. I'm already in full trip planning mode. We're planning a Montana hike-just to settle once and for all which is better: Winds or Beartooths.  :)
Let us know what you come up with

I am very familiar with the walk back to the big Sandy Trailhead from Desolation Valley (East Fork Valley) but have only done your planned route down Washakie Creek to meet the Fremont Trail once.
It's okay, but hardly worth the hassle. It six hours, twelve miles, mostly down hill from Skull Lake to Big Sandy TH, bypassing Marm's L, and Dad's Lake on a well marked trail. Overall East Fork Valley is one of the loveliest cirque's in the range.
Except for maybe crossing Washakie Creek you should be able to walk out without getting your feet wet by late August which is the very, very best time to be in the Wind Rivers.
