My family and I are fortunate enough to have three weeks of vacation out west this year.  As always, we'll spend one week in the Beartooths.

We are considering spending the remaining two weeks in the Wind River Range on a traverse of the range mostly on the west side.  I don't make my daughter carry her food, she is only 5, so we'll definitely need to be resupplied in order to stay out for two weeks.  I have seen horses carrying in supplies to the Wind River Range on my previous trips.

Does anyone have information regarding outfitters that I might contact to understand how resupply works, and the approximate costs?  I assume there are limited places the horse can reach, and I will need to carefully consider this in the planning of our route.

Thank you for any help you may be able to provide.

In case you are interested, my daughter backpacked in the WRR at age 3 and 4 also, and here are our TR's:

On the East side out of Dubois the best outfitter I know that does drops in the Winds charges a $1000 a horse. Good horsemen/women know that on balance the Winds are too rugged for horses. Although we could certainly get some busineess in the Winds we keep our horses in the Absaroka.

You might dial up the Wyoming Outiftters Association to find out who does drops from the Pinedale area.

Not sure what area you are going to be in, but I know this guy guides in the Green Rivers area.  Pretty good guy, always had good information and is in the mountains pretty regular......may be able to work something out with him.

Jim Allen's daughter was Miss USA Wyoming 2012.  She knows her way around horses and the Winds from what I understand.  Who would you rather have resupply you, her or some crusty old cowpoke?

Seriously, the Allens have a good reputation and do resupply for NOLS groups.

If you would consider re-supply via PackGoats, I might be able to help you, depending on the dates.  Besides PackGoats can get into places where horses cannot.

Contact me at vigilguy at gmail dot com if you are interested.

Thank you for your replies.  At the urging of my wife, we have decided to take two one week trips.

My plan for one of the trips is Green Lakes to Peak Lake to Island Lake to Indian Basin to Wall Lake to Elkhart.

Thinking about checking our Double Cabin's neck of the woods for the second trip.
