I want to take a trip there soon. I won't say when in case you get any fancy ideas about mugging me. Somewhere on the east/south side. Two nights, lake, not super far hike stuff like that. Or on the west side if you know any awesome spots. Just don't want to drive farther from Denver. Thanks bye.

Go in from Yampa. Park at Stillwater reservoir and hike up the Devils Causeway. Once you get up on top its gentle rolling terrain.  Down in the valleys near the lakes a ton of skeeters.
Dayhiking? BPing? How many miles?

BPing. ~5 miles each way. I like to set up camp and then might hike around from there. Thought about that area or maybe the mandall lakes. Skeeters bad this year? Like normal bad or can't put a spoon to your mouth without being eaten alive?

One of my favorite spots for doing a short trip is Upper Island Lake. Same route in from Stillwater to top of Chinese Wall then about 7 easy miles west to a nice lake with great fishing. Lower Island Lake is pretty nice also. You can loop back via Deer Lake trail.

The areas mentioned (east side) are good.
I also like going up from Trappers Lake above Meeker on the west side.  Once on top, you have your choice as to which way to head.  Get the topo maps.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I want to avoid the 5+ hour drive to trappers lake, some other time. I'm split between mandall lakes, the causeway area and south of there(hooper, keener, edge lake)

Oh what to do...

And I thought it was really just because you didn't want to become your own Grandpa in Meeker. That place was straight out of Deliverance for me 30 years ago.
