Hey Jackovegas,

Could you tell me anything about how the trip went? I am considering trying something similar in September.

Anybody out there ever done any backpacking in Denali in September?

I stayed at the Anchorage YMCA before taking the train to Mt. McKinley National Park...but that was 1975 so it might not still have rooms.

Check when it closes.  I slightly remember that in mid September the bus traffic stops (or reduced) and they allow 'very few' cars up the road to Wonder Lake.  Done as a lottery and usually for photographers, or other 'special' needs.

You have a pretty good chance at being a solo hiker almost anywhere you go beyond Wonder Lake.

The back packing there is spectacular and you can be in alpine tundra within a mile and then on a cross country trip of a lifetime. OR trundle along the sand bars for as far as you have provisions for. From Wonder Lake onward there are many non maintained roads and trails from the great mineral boom.  Best to look into those as they contain MUCH more information than does just the tourist plodding that most do. An amazing wealth of historical places to go to, if you know they are there.

There are probably less than 50 miles of maintains trails in the park and they go less than a few miles from the visitor centers.  There are no wilderness permits required, only a validation that you have heard the moose and bear lecture.  Best to leave an itinerary if you are in the least paranoid something could befall you.  Bring a fishing pole there are no licenses required.  Not sure there is even a season.  Best to check with the Denali admin staff for sure.  I love fish not fishing.

Might try above for info on hikes.
