I can't find much else on it but apparently there is talk of re-introducing elk into western Maryland. I have no idea if this is a good diea or not, I simply post it here for discussion.

Other than introducing a prize big game animal into two counties, what good would this do? The rest of the state is over run with deer, so it's not like the bear/coyote don't have enough to eat.

I tend to agree, but I've never been accused of being a big picture guy when it comes to these kind of issues.

I'm failing to see an alternative big picture either. Given the narrowness of Alleghanney county, any re-introduced elk would end up in neighboring states within days as well.
This is little more than an attempt to make money for guides and DNR.

Meh, you'll hear people bitching about hitting them with cars next.
If they want a place to put them, they need to put them down here in WV in the mon forest. we got plenty of areas for them

They seem to be spreading slowly in the northern PA elk range, perhaps because they are now hunted again within regulations - they're still a few miles away from the 4,000 acre watershed on the Elk/Jefferson county border I work with. That territory does widen out again between Savage River and Deep Creek Lake, it certainly might be another way Accident could live up to its name.

I agree with jnk, but unfortunately, the WV DNR study area for elk reintroduction (by way of natural migration from Kentucky) is the southwestern coalfields - not the kind of place I want to go.

I think they should only release them if there is a shortage and if they are native to that area. For instance, I believe deer used to roam in the Manhattan area long ago, but there are no deer there now, so obviously they should be reintroduced in large numbers in places like Manhattan, Brooklyn, Jamaica Queens.
Seriously though, its hard to say what impact this kind of thing has. They reintroduced wolves into Yellowstone, and at first they said it was working out, but I dont know if its had any significantly negative effects at this point. But if elk used to live in western MD alongside deer, then I'm sure there was a balance that worked itself out, and maybe that will happen again, which might mean that the deer population will potentially drop to make up for the elk, due to competition for space and food. The only difference is now when you hit a large animal with your car, it might be an even larger elk instead of a deer. Thats the downside....

This is little more than an attempt to make money for guides and DNR. I think if you ask them nicely, they would respect the wishes of DNR and stay within the county borders.... If not, then fine them... Just put up some of those signs, similar to the ones they use for deer along the roadway.
