My brothers are venturing out again for our annual winter backpacking trip and we're torn between Harriman SP or Thunder Swamp.

I really want to go to Harriman again, it's a great place and beautiful, but with that guy unaccounted for, there are some doubts.

With Thunder Swamp, is there any preferred direction of travel?  Other advise.  My brother is concerned with how swampy it may be, but I can't imagine it being a total slog fest.

Your main issue will be the rocks, not the swamps.  Sections of the trail are rocky.  TST has wet spots like any trail, but you are not slogging through swamps.

Overall, it is a nice trail.  Pretty easy.  Section along Bushkill Creek is nice, cascades on Red Rock Run, cool beaver dam on Spruce Run with a nice spot to camp.  Many cool creeks.  Many creeks have bridges, but not all.

Crossing Thunder Swamp is an experience, I think the trail follows the top of an old lowdam or something.  Tim Swamp Trail was really pretty when I hiked it years ago with hemlocks along the creek.

If you decide to hike the spur, the pond at Painter Swamp is beautiful, and is a real pond, not a bog.  Big Bear Swamp/Stillwater Natural Area is interesting with thick spruce forests; you never see much of the actual swamp.

Thanks a lot, it's PA so the rocks are normal, the other parts sound very nice though, so it's a good balance.
