I won't vote here, but did find the results interesting:

#1 is a cropped version of #2. MR did the crop and in my opinion that crop changed the entire photo, as I had originally intended it: my primary subject had been the pointy bump in the far distance, now it was the cliffs. Reading the votes, and re-examining the two photos, I think I agree with everyone else. #1 is better than #2, at least with the book cover text! (For me, there's too much empty foreground in #2.)

From a photographer's point of view, this unbiased feedback is wonderful, since it gets me to rethink some of my compositions. Thanks everyone.

Now, if there was a backpacker chick standing or sitting on that foreground rock I'de have a totally different opinion.

I know nothing about photography. I want to dee what catch's the potential buyer's eye the fastest. That's why I cropped, to make colors more the focus than the composition.

I like the view best in #2, the view seems big, expansive, with a nice element of color, but there is a lot of ledge in the foreground.  Although, I do get the feeling of being on that ledge.  All are very nice.

I see you/publisher like the "weekend backpacking" idea, hope it works out.  Keep writing!
