I've done one short day hike since our foray on the Loyalsock Trail. Shortly after our car camping trip I spent half of the day in the ER in excruciating pain. I've been diagnosed with arthritis in the left hip (no surprise there) and a torn labrum (the gasket around the top of the femur) in the same joint. I'll be having arthroscopic surgery on July 5th. This will be followed by a long rehab and then a series of training outings before I can tackle anything as challenging as say the Standing Stone Trail. Needless to say this blows my entire schedule out of the water and might also delay the publication of my next book but as General McArthur once said "I shall return!"

Good luck with your surgery.   It sucks getting older, I know.  I look like Mad Max hiking with two knee braces.

That's also why I shy away from backpacking with larger groups of people. I know when I've walked my last mile for the day.

Youch!  I have a similar problem for which I've been avoiding treatment, since I fear it will knock me out for too long.  Heal fast!

I work for disability, remember!

In WV the nickname for getting disability is either "The Check" like " Oh John? He's on "the CHECK" now" or, if it's for mental reasons "Did you hear? He's getting the "Crazy Check"!

Don't let yourself get too frustrated, I've had to rebound
from a fractured pelvis, you'll get through it. Be open to
modifying your system for your new needs; the woods
will heal you...

I'm already thinking about doing more 2 day and base camp trips. Time to start slowing down I guess.

It's taken a while, but I'm backpacking more now than anytime in 30+ years of it.

You may slow down, but you will see more that way!!!
