Hello,

I'm a Massachusetts Yankee about to head down south to Florida for a week or two in December. Am looking for some recommendations for places to experience some of Florida's natural beauty. Any and all recommendations appreciated.

Thanks!

The big cypress swamp.  Take a tour of it.  Manatee springs.  Ocala nat. forest.  What part of Fl will you be in?  it's a big state, ya know.

It certainly is.  Gulf Islands Nat'l Seashore & Ft. Pickens is nice.  Or John Pennekamp State Park.  Can't be more than 700 or 800 road miles.

Basically, think water more than hiking.  Fortunately, there's plenty it, and something lovely and different from MA in every part of the state.

Here's a couple links, I borrowed from a similar post on White Blaze

http://www.floridahikes.com/map/backpacking

Also they mentioned Cayo Costa, a really cool island to camp on off of the southern gulf Coast.  I hear the Stars are Unbelievable & that you'll have 7+ miles of deserted beach nearly to yourself??

Heres a youtube video I found on it.

There is so much to do in our lovely state.  three sisters springs in crystal river with the manatees is not to be missed.  what are you looking for exactly?  A hike down the suwannee is spectacular,  fakahatchee (sp?) strand nice for a guided tour.  Fisheating creek great for primitive kayak camping.

FLorida trail is always great, course it's hunting season so keep that in mind.  and as mentioned cayo costa - you can yak out or take the ferry.

As others mentioned above there are lots of places to go.  We could help you more if you told up about a certain part of the state you plan of visiting and what type of activity you are looking for.

There are just so many things to do.  I just returned from a 95 mile paddle on the Suwannee River and am planning my next Florida trip.
