I'm planning a 4-day backpacking trip from Davenport Gap to Hot Springs, NC in November.  We will actually start at the Big Creek Ranger Station , hike up to the AT and go east from there.  I'm thinking we will camp at Painter Branch, Roaring Fork Shelter, and Deer Park Mountain Shelter.  Is there anything we should know about this section?  Should we wear orange?  All advice will be appreciated.  Thanks!

Orange just makes it easer for the hill billies to find you. I was backpacking on the Chatooga last weekend (where they filmed Deliverance) and there was plenty of gun fire and lots of hikers wearing orange. Probably not a bad idea actually.

When you get to Hot Springs there's a great watering hole called The Iron Horse just a few steps off the trail after you cross the river and the railroad tacks.

BTW, is your avatar a photo of Thomas Knob shelter?

Thanks for the comment on wearing orange and the Iron Horse suggestion.

I've had this avatar so long I can't remember which shelter it is or even the state.  Guess I've been section hiking the AT forever!
