Thought this was handy enough to share:

Decent trail map with traffic-highlighted areas.

This was sent to me in response from a Daniel Boone NF e-mail inquiry regarding backcountry campsites.

Considering all sorts of loops in this area, but trying to avoid the spring crowds while finding an 'open sky' type site, not necessarily on a ridge top. Starting to think I might be dreaming...

That is a useful map, thanks for sharing.

I've spent a substantial amount of time backpacking and hiking in the Red and that map is definitely pretty accurate -- but in my experience, even the "Moderate Use" areas can feel crowded on fair-weather weekends compared to other parts of the Daniel Boone National Forest.

In regard to finding an "open sky" site that's not on a ridgetop, you're going to pretty limited. I honestly can't think of any public land that would offer you a view comparable to that on a bare-rock ridgetop. Maybe that's because I haven't spent much time looking for one, but nothing really jumps out at me.

Good luck!

Weird, the link takes me to the same map, not a bigger one. I haven't been there yet but am considering it for early April.

Try this link:

It should work, as it's a 'new' upload.

Re: the 'open sky' dream, I'm trying to avoid a bare rock ridgetop, but it's looking like it's that, or an open plains/flatland option, which isn't such a horrible idea. I hear there are some options near the lakes around DBNF as well...

Happy to share. ; )
