http://www.gethiking.net/

This is the website of the first (potential) thru-hikers of the GET, which goes from Alabama to New York.  The trail is about 1,600 miles long, and not yet complete.

I recently read Earl Shaffer's "Walking with Spring" and it is fascinating how some of their experiences are so similar to Mr. Shaffer's, despite this thru-hike being almost 60 years later.

The posts and pictures are interesting and at times hilarious.  Worth the read.  They just entered Kentucky, heading north.

Let's all wish them the best on their journey.

Cool. I met "Sixty-five" last year doing the ECT(Eastern Continental Trail). I didn't even know what that was until a friend told me.
Guess we'll never be able to say we ran out of trails to hike!

I wish them well.  We can't have too many trails.  This is good news.

hikerjer, I couldn't agree more.  It cracks me up though, I have heard people semi-bash this trail and others like it for being, just like the AT and why would you hike it if you don't hike the AT, etc.  Lame.  It's a trail and I'm sure it's very nice, just enjoy that there's another goal you can stride to complete, IMHO.

They did it!

The GET was recently thru-hiked for the first time by Jo Swanson and Bart Houck.  Congratulations to them on their historic accomplishment.  Hopefully more will follow.

Is Jo the first female to be the first thru-hiker of any of America's long trails?

After more than 1,800 miles, nine states, and several pairs of shoes, Joanna Swanson and Bart Houck have blazed a new trail, becoming the first hikers to complete the new Great Eastern Trail.
