In the midst of this government shut down, I made plans to cross another national park off my bucket list. We're headed to Dry Tortugas National Park in November for a day trip (god willing!). We'll be in Key West for a few days and could not resist hopping on the ferry and spending the day snorkeling, touring the fort, and getting another stamp for the national parks passport. We really wanted to camp over night, but the logistics were not in our favor this time.

Anyone ever been there before?

Neville posted a Tr with pics last year, I think.

Thanks I forgot about that TR. I just dug up the photos from the search graves to have a look :)

He was post 10 in this thread, about the same inquiry.  Hope it helps.  I had to spend some time digging it up myself.  His pictures linked look right nice.

Yes, in 1993.  I took a seaplane from Key West and enjoyed a day of snorkeling, swimming, an exploring the fort.  It was a thoroughly enjoyable day trip.  The park has a nice beach.  Make sure you bring plenty of water and sunscreen, too.

I met an interesting biologist there who was doing research and as it turned out, she was from my hometown and we had a good chat.  An overnighter  would be fun, but that's the most time I old want to spend on the island as it is really small.  There are several other small islands there; however, you are barred from visiting them.

Looking forward to seeing your pics...!

Happy Trails,

RS

We were there is past January.  We camped overnight, but wished we had stayed one more night. Because the best part is when all the day people leave and you have the island pretty much to yourselves.  You can snorkel anywhere but the boat docks and the beaches are quiet.  We laid out on the helicopter pad and watched the stars. Awesome. I understand, not this time.  Do the day trip. The boat is a lot of support.  They provide snorkeling gear, lunch, water, ice, even a shower to rinse off.
