We're planning a trip to Mt. Mitchell this winter and are going to backpack in, camp a few days, and bag some sixers in the area.
I know that the Blue Ridge Pkwy and all the state park is closed for the winter, so we were wanting to park down lower and hike up.
My questions are:
Can you drive to Black Mtn. campground and park there?
and
Hiking up the MST/Mt. Mitchell Trail to the top, could we camp at the campground (backpack style) even though its closed? I guessing no one will be there anyway.
Thanks.

It's been a couple of years since I've been there but at that time you could get to campground and park at gate.

The park is NOT closed during the winter. The road in is currently closed due to snow/ice, so the only way to get up there is hike in like you said.

This park map shows the two backpacking campsites outside the state park (Deep Gap and one just off the MST...I forget the name). The campground in the park is open too, but walk-up only (no reservations available.)

You can park at the gate at Black Mtn campground or Mt. Mitchell State Park?
Usually the BRP is closed due to snow.

Sorry I should have said gate at black mountain campground.  I rode up there winter before last and even though there was plenty of snow you could still drive to gate at black mountain campground. Roadside campsites are past gate on road that goes to blue ridge parkway.
