I'm new to this site and to backpacking in general.  I am graduating college this Spring and to celebrate, some friends and I want to take a backpacking trip that will last at least 2-3 weeks, preferrably one that ends in or near the southern tier of NY (I live in Otsego county, if that helps).  I was thinking of starting somewhere in Virginia, but I don't know which trails to follow to find our way back to NY.  Any help is much appreciated!

"AT, best route"?

Um... follow the white blazes? :;):

Need to know how many miles a day you can reasonably expect to hike and then work backwards from your prefered end point.

Like the man said "Follow the White Blazes"

14 or 21 days - You'll need to figure resupply days & don't forget a least 1 or 2 zero days unless your strong enough from the start to be traveling 20 mile days

Have fun in PA, I hated that state
