Rob, a trail crew manager, my girlfriend, and I humped in some food and supplies for a trail crew working on an extension of the Long Path. Gorgeous day for it. Got map 43 (new) or 143 (old)? Got to K7, very, very top of the map. Right now the LP follows Woodland Valley Road. The new trail will be cut back south from the Terrace Shelter trail and then follow the ridge from Cross Mountain to Mt. Pleasant, then north from there.

There's a vista along the proposed route that easily rivals GL. I think it's better, honestly. Different, surely, but even more breathtaking. This trail's got a bit of a different feel to it. It's definitely got excellent opportunities for views, but even the little quiet places feel different.

Really nice trail work these folks are doing. As much as they complain about the pay, they do good work.

Found a tree carved in '58. That was cool.

Anyway, give NYNJTC money. We did.

Should have some pics along soon.

They have trails in New York and New Jersey?

Sometimes its good to be a trail angel. Some of those wimmin' are hardly angelic when they put their pics and shovels down.

You call us douchebags and I put a little jab back and you get offended? For real?

Anyway you have a great day and try not taking things so negatively.

Happy Trails.

I guess it's this: Too many people who hike take for granted that the trails they enjoy take a lot of work. I'd never seen trail work being done before, at least not to the extent I saw out there.

I carried a 50L backpack full of food 3.5 miles to their camp. The last mile was a bushwhack. I thought getting there was tough, and it was. Then I saw what they brought in: 20# sledgehammers, 6" pry bars, various picks and axes, plus all their own gear for a week. And the work site I visited is another half mile past the camp. They were building some stairs, using a come-along to pull half-ton rocks uphill, setting them within tolerances. One young woman was using that 20# sledge to make rocks smaller to set under flagstones near a switchback. No, they don't carry their tools around everywhere they go, but they had to get them in, and they had to get them out.

Last Monday and Tuesday the temps were in the high 80's, and they worked.

And they do it for free.

So, I was trying to make a point about some good works, perhaps the fruits of which you yourself enjoy. Maybe inspire someone to make a donation or get out and do trail work themselves, or at least think twice about how the trail they walk got there. I felt like you were making light of the message, as well as me.

DMP
