I drove up Tues afternoon for a hike up Slide Mt in the Catskills. My plan was to start about 4:00, andd camp at the DEC designated spot about a mile in.

The trail was nicely packed down, and microspikes were fine.

Had a nice sunset, I wound up hiking about 2 miles in. I never saw any marker for a designated campsite, or noticed possible spots where they should have been. I was lucky, however, to come upon a nice flat bench on a hillside, easily 150' from the trail.

So I had to set up camp in the waning daylight. I was real careful to snowshoe the snow out level, as my tentsite the weekeend before was tilted, you know how that is. But it was a nice spot. I dug out a little seat for the kitchen, got the stove going, and had a delicious FB dinner. It was a clear night with a crescent moon and lots of stars, and, though it was cold I was able to stay out a bit before I finally had to retreat to the tent. It got down to about 10 degrees, but I was fine with a hot water bottle in the bag.

Some nice views along the trail the next morning, and it was calm at the summit.

I ran into another hiker at the summit, had a pleasant stroll down, and was out by 12:00, taking my time. Lots of snow left in the woods, winter may last a bit in the mountains!

My wife and daughter are out of town and while it promises to be a bit warmer than I would like I may do a one nighter Friday.
