This is an odd trip to post on Backpacker’s website but the idea for it came from an article in the December 1999 issue of Backpacker describing where and when to go to have the highest probability of seeing as spectacular an Aurora Borealis as possible: Go to a relatively cloudless area in the Auroral Zone during a solar maximum around the time of an equinox and a new moon.  The magic time is this March and the place I’m looking to go is the Northwest Territories.  My trips have always been DIY but I have something else in mind this time.  The outfitter’s brochure reads, “Travel to our cozy, rustic cabins for three days of fully guided dog sled adventures.  Run the trails with your dog team by day and spend five hours each night exploring the natural wonder of the Aurora.  A warm cabin and good food are part of the experience.”  It’s five days altogether and includes cabin & lodge accommodations, airport transfers, winter clothing and tour transportation for $1299.  I’m shooting for 3/7-3/11.  More are welcome but in order to book this thing I need at least one person beside myself.  If you want a front row seat for the best light show on the planet let me know soon.  The date is fast approaching and affordable airfare to Yellowknife is disappearing.
