Is it necessary to waterproof the outside leather on your hiking boots if they are Gore-tex? Does anyone do this?

Yes. Definitely. Just because water won't penetrate the membrane doesn't mean the heat won't wick out from your feet if they're wet. I spray my Gore-Tex boots with DWR over and over until the leather absorbs the silicone to the point where it beads off. It also helps condition the leather.

Me personally, I've never waterproofed any of my goretex boots and I've never had any problems.
I suppose it depends on the material though, as mine aren't leather. Synthetic of some sort that doesn't absorb water.

Thanks for the responses guys. My Vasques are all leather so, I'll give the DWR a try. As always, appreciate all the help.

Totally agree with tigger. Yes, the membrane will prevent water from entering the boot with the GTX membrane, but once the upper material becomes wetted out three things happen:

1 - the boots become heavier and more uncomfortable to wear
2 - what little breathability GTX offers is completely negated by having a wet upper. Sweat cannot leave the boots.
3 - leather becomes dried out from being wet and dried, and the organic materials in the water will damage it over time. Keep the leather from becoming wet is the best way to keep your boots in good shape.

4.  your feet will get really really cold if the exterior is wet.

assuming it is cold out I guess  ???

I think Tigger has mentioned it a few times but I just bought a can of Camp Dry that I'm going to put on my boots and Precip
