My wife is going to the Allegheny 100 Backpacking Challenge, and she doesn't want to carry our MSR Mini-Works.  She is thinking about a Steri-pen, but I thought an in line filter for her Camelbak might be viable as well.  I see a few different options online, but I haven't a clue about them.  Anyone recommend one?  She's doing either 75 or 100 miles, so it only has to work for a weekend (meaning she probably won't need a spare cartridge).  How are these things for ease of draw?  Will they get hard to draw on as the filter gets clogged?  Any other considerations?  Thanks.  I only wish I could get the weekend off of work so that I could do it too.

If she's after the lightest, most versatile, and most compact inline filter setup -- then I highly recommend the Aquamira Frontier Pro.

The thing weighs just 2 ounces.   You can screw it onto a Platypus soft bottle - it has a built-in bite valve.  Or you can remove the bite valve and connect the thing as an in-line filter.  Or you can use it as a gravity filter.  Sucking requires almost no extra effort (I've used it on ascends up Mt. Whitney) and flow rate is very decent.

Even better, the filter has a carbon core so it will improve water taste as well.

Perfect system?  No.  I find its 3.0 micron pore size too big for my liking.  So I pair this filter with a tiny bottle of household bleach.  I get water.  Then put in 5 drops of bleach per quart or liter of water.  Wait half an hour.  Then drink via the filter.

Used in combination (bleach + filter) -- I get a light and compact system that "does it all":

o  bleach 'kills' tiny viruses and bacteria
o  filter blocks the bigger baddies like protozoa (girardia, crypto, etc.)
 o  filter clarifies water
o  filter improves water taste (including all traces of chlorine taste).

If the wife doesn't want to fuss with bleach and viruses are not an issue, then there are easier (but bulkier) inline options, such as the Sawyer filter.

Thanks Ben.  Does the Frontier Pro come with the adapters for a Camelbak?  The description is a little vague.  That looks like just the ticket.  Now if I can figure out her sleep system...

Hi Talus -- Not sure -- I use Platys.  Best to call them directly and ask.   Best of luck outfitting the wife.

I have a Sawyer gravity filter that I've used several times now - so far, so good.
I don't use their blue storage bag.  I just fill the grey bag and let it drip in to my own containers.

It's nice not to have to pump water.  I just fill the bag and take a break while it's dripping.

If  anyone is interested, the Aquamira filter does work with a Camelbak, and comes with the adapter.

Good to know, Talus.

In case the Mrs. is interested in combining bleach with the Aquamira Pro -- this place sells dropstopper bottles for good prices and very reasonable shipping rates.  Remember, you only need 5 drops to treat one quart/liter -- so a small bottle is really all that's needed.
