I have been playing with their new bag this winter. Just wrote it up. Neat design that actually works for side-sleepers.

Nice report, Ray.

Contrat to Big Agnes, "the Altair has been constructed allow the bag to move vertically while still staying attached to the pad. This lets shoulders and hips be vertical instead of spread out flat like back-sleepers have, but ***does not compress the down by pulling the bag tight at these spots."

Can you explain the two hood styles you refer to? "The hood of the Altair is of the flat style (as opposed to the hood-type popular right now)."

Yes, you are correct as I think you meant "contrary" to BA

The bigger looser cut BA bags work fine, but the lighter high end bags do not. I know because I paid for 3 of the high end bags just to find they were too tight at the shoulders.

A Jacket style hood looks like the one on a parka, very tight to the head and poking out of the end.. The flat style is more traditional.

This bag has the type I referred too.

Thanks for the edit. So are you saying the flat hood works better for side sleeping?

Only if the bag does not turn with you. A bag with an even fill ratio has just as much down on the bottom as the front. This can be flipped with no temperature penalty. In that case I'd rather have the small, tight hood.

But if I am turning inside the bag then the wide hood is better as I leave it as un-cinched as possible so my face is not buried inside my bag.

Look at this, one of the coolest winter bags I have ever seen. It is made to move with you. The claustrophobic need not apply. ;-)
