Mars Rover Makes Discovery For "the History Books," but NASA Is Keeping It a Secret For Now

By Josh Voorhees
Posted Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2012, at 3:02 PM ET

Scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena are keeping their lips sealed for the time being while they run additional tests to make sure the discovery holds up. That, however, hasn't stopped one of the mission's leaders from speculating loudly that it'll be one that rewrites at least some of what we know about the universe.

Probably bacteria if I had to bet.

If it's anything like the Aliens or Prometheus movies, I'm cashing in all my retirement funds and soak myself in drink to spoil any lurking chestbursters.

I'm thinking maybe something organic or a fossile of something that may have been alive at some point.

But, I bet it will be anti-climatic.

My smartass answer is that I hope they've found the 6-fingered man that killed my father.  In all honesty, I'm still just in awe of seeing pictures taken by a robot ON MARS.

Diamonds, gold, something of the like.  Either that or a piece of wreckage from another system.  We know it isn't Voyager.

Can you imagine telling the POTUS that they have found the wreckage of a spaceship?  Maybe reverse engineering the propulsion system?  What a day for our science people!

In reality, no matter what they found, a significant find is news for scientists regardless of it's immediate impact.

Man, I hope it's not a precious resource.  If it is, cue every major world power developing a system at any cost (financial, environmental, etc.) to retrieve those minerals...

We've been teased before with chemistry that might result from life (was that Viking?), and there was some talk about methane traces when the first turned the instrument on, but not later. It would be exciting if they find some convincing signs of bacteria.

My younger brother works for NASA and his group actually designed and built some of the soil analysis instrumentation on Curiosity. Regardless of what they find, the ability to sample and perform such sophisticated experiments on another planet is amazing.
