Out on the ranch yesterday and ran into a nice group of elk. There's just as many off the photo as in it.

Enjoy...

I'm glad you showed the close up.  My suburban self was trying to figure out in the first picture which side of the stone wall was I supposed to be looking at for the elk.

So much for population decimation due to wolf depredation.

So much for population decimation due to wolf depredation.

And you know this how?

The elk in the picture are part of a wintering group just outside YNP. Prior to 1997 and the wolf reintroduction, this herd numbered right at 15,000. Today, it's below 4,800.

Wolves had an immediate and dramatic effect on the elk in this valley. I've personally watched them hunting and taking down elk here, including within sight of where these pictures were taken.

BUT, like all things, the truth of the matter is far more complicated than a response like yours, or another typical response from the opposite POV.

FWP bears a large part of the blame for not curtailing late season cow hunts years ago (after the reintroduction) and also it's inability to say NO to whining ranchers and their much loved "depredation" hunts in this particular valley.

So like most things, the truth is somewhere in the middle... thankfully, now FWP has drastically reduced cow tags and eliminated late season hunts and is also telling the much-coddled ranchers to shove their excessive depredation "hunts", while at the same time issuing a decent amount of wolf tags for this area.

Those three moves will absolutely help maintain the population of elk in the valley for future generations... at least it's hoped so. Time will tell.

I've seen all the wintering elk in this valley together on the ranch at one time... it's an amazing sight to see, hear and smell over 4,000 elk all together at one time!

That's great... if you right click on the images and select "view image" you can see them larger.
