“Dad? Do you know where I’m calling from?”

It’s my son, Josh calling…well, actually it’s Private David Joshua Ray calling, the newly minted Marine. I hear the words, but not sure I recognize the voice. It sounds like my boy, but then I notice it mixed with the tones of a young, confident man.

Finally, I find my own voice. “Please don’t tell me you’re calling from jail.”

He’s not; the px (store) lost power, so he’s standing in line with a ton of guys behind him waiting to do the same. Since he couldn’t buy a trac phone, he’s limited to just about 3 minutes to call…and won’t be able to call his girlfriend.

I tell him sorry and hand the phone to two girls who have been waiting with me, watching the screen of my phone light up the already glowing features of his mother and sister. As they huddle together to listen intently to the Blonde Tornado talk about his love of family and no power, I realize the real answer to his original question.

Where are you calling from, son? Where you always do: my heart.

Amen. I hope my son treats me the same way after he gets in. He'll be enlisting in six months. I hear the pride in your words and rightfully so.

Glad to hear he is doing well. I just spent the weekend with my brother in law, an ex-marine. We dug out some photos of his boot camp graduation in 2004 and had a good laugh (he's gained about 60 lbs since then). Semper Fi!
