Merry Xmas everyone!
I took my sweetie out cross-country skiing today. She likes dogs, so I took her to a trail system that permits free-ranging hounds.
Without exception, it seems, our canine friends go bananas in the snow. The romping, rolling, digging, and frolicking is pretty fun to watch.
So is there any science that explains this? Or is it just a happy mystery?

We got a pup from the Humane Society last month. We had one snow fall with really cold temps at the beginning of Dec. She wasn't fond of that. She looked up at me with her sad eyes and held one paw in the air.
After the snow fall last night, the temps were warmer today and the sun was shining bright. She was romping around, burrowing her nose in the snow and having a great time!
Tonight, the temp is -1*. Her spunk diminished. She sat down in the snow, looked up at me with her sad puppeh dog eyes and lifted her paw in the air. I took her inside promptly to warm up.

They're smarter than we are. They get more joy out of the simple things like fresh snow to run in and squirrels to chase.

A work colleague and I discuss this often - how nice it could be to not be constantly observing how things could be done better, constantly anticipating bad things that could befall us, etc. I'm pretty dumb and haven't proved you right yet . . .

Fur. The ex and I had some wolf-like malamutes like picture 17 on the link above. We stopped off the highway in thigh deep snow for relief; they ran in a circle around the truck about thirty times reducing the snow to ankle deep.
Coming back to the desert, we put snow in their bowls in the truck bed. Upon arrival they had their paws over the snow, trying to conserve every last bit of it.
