Why not keep topics about guns and killing in the TPA?

I happen to think these sorts of topics do belong in TPA, not because they are not timely or sensitive, but because they will degenerate almost immediately into 2 sides not listening to the other, and name calling.

I'm indifferent but I suppose technically they should be in the TPA. It is kinda nice to see some posting around here anyway.
Really I just don't care. If I don't like it I don't read it. But I understand most people aren't like that. Its the same reason I can be a gun advocate in one post and then 4 posts later I'm screaming to ban guns. Because I know that (everyone listen) nothing I or anyone else posts on the hot topics is going to change anyone's mind or how they feel. Its just not going to happen and I really don't care if everyone in here feels like I do.
Just my opinion, man.

Definitely the TPA
These forums are like channels. All the content is fine, but should be separate for people who prefer to filter it.
My girlfriend wouldn't like it if the Cooking Channel started airing MMA fights, and I wouldn't like it if Nigella come on when I'm watching a science show or a baseball game.
Well...actually I would be OK with the Nigella thing. Bad example, but I think I made my point.

History on this board shows anything politically controversial is likely to attract usual members that quickly hijack whatever subject, then rant, spew, that often leads to predictable bad vibes and or name calling. There are simply a lot of people that cannot discuss much of anything controversial in a civil, calm manner. The best change this backpacking enthusiast board ever did was a few years ago when after the rest of us had had enough so BP finally created TPA forcing a significant number of members parked in the larger audience of Trailhead Register to vacate. Particularly nauseous around election cycles.

Mass killings that go on week in and week out in our great country are subjects that SHOULD be viewed and discussed by everyone. They are too important to let head in the sand ostriches avoid seeing the reality.
Sadly, the comments above are correct, while it should be possible to have such topics here, it is not possible in practice.
They would just deteriorate to the same level as TPA.
Just remain thankful that we do have the TPA for those of us who want to explore these subjects. YMMV

Parents have been saying that since Elvis.
Parents, and especially grandparents, have been saying that since Adam and Eve.
Socrates had a particulary entertaining little diatribe about the subject.

We need a whole new section just for posts about guns, unless you live in a state where you can fish with a gun, then they can post in the gear section under "fishing equipment."

I started a thread titled "what now" to look at the question of response to the Newtown killings. That thread has not deteriorated to a TPA level, though not everyone agreed that the response should be individual and community, as well as political.
Really, I'm amazed that more than a few people seem to see this as only political.

I dozed off, did someone say there was porn on the TPA?
Some topics are worthy of discussion by a wider group. If you are more sensitive by nature to conflict, you don't have to read it, and most are able to tone it down a little, but I prefer honest feelings to phony sentiment.
I've written some pretty scathing things this past week, something that I find cathartic, only to delete them or post only to my journal.
