Thought that you guys would like to see what us PNW folks do for kicks. Rumi and I went snowshoeing yesterday at Hurricane Ridge in the Olympic National Park here in Washington.
It's georgous in summer, but REALLY comes into it's own in the winter time!
The parking lot had just been plowed. 101" snow depth on the level.
It's not called HURRICANE ridge for nothing! The wind driven snow was plastered on the trees, making for a surreal landscape!
 Rumi the stylin dude.
 Fiddlin' with his camera.
 You can feel the stillness!
 A Rumi silhouette.
Following the ridge ahead of us.
Breaking first trail in snow is hard work!
This is where we had come from.
Clouds came rolling in and we ended up turning around. It sucks when you keep falling down because of no contrast between snow and sky. This is looking back to our turn around point.
We had a great time, even though we didn't make our destination! Some of you flatlanders need to come along on our next adventure so we won't sound so pitiful with all the wheezing and sucking of air sounds we make!
The entire album if you're really bored: http://s65.beta.photobucket.com/user....5845395

Holy jealousness Batman!!!
Great photos, really beautiful scenery. I'm hoping to get a little taste in the White Mountains tomorrow (even with the recent storm, I don't think it will be quite as dramatic as your photos).
Thanks for sharing!

Very nice. My wife and I started out today, and I broke the rear strap on the second step. She left me for dead.

Schweet.
I was going to say something about Whistle Pigs and other bovines but, well, I might have to drive through there some day.
After the scorching, dry summer we had all this white stuff is awesome. I've got to start snowshoeing and get rid of this ordinance I've packed on my belly.
Thanks for sharing guys.

These are truly gorgeous. We had to get inland to find snow ourselves but only a few inches at about 4,000 feet, nothing like this.

A couple more for those too lazy to open the full album link:
Looks like a little fat snowbird.....but really just a glob of snow on a tree top. (Yes, I'm easily amused)
Here are the REAL birds. Also known as Gray Jays, or Camp Robbers. I call them Flying Rats.

They are VERY tame and will sit on your open hand, thinking you have some food for them. One of them bit my thumb 'cause I didn't feed him anything. Bastard!

I guess I should admit, all that trompin' through deep snow wore me out. Dang, sometimes it was a real effort just to ascend a three or four foot rise. slipping back after making progress was kinda disheartening. And of course we had to be carefull to avoid tree wells, which sometimes was not as easy as it might seem.
Anyway, we stayed safe and had an excellent time in the snow. Even though it wore me out, it got me all excited being out there. I can hardly wait till my next opportunity to tromp around some more.
