Remember 'absolute zero' in Physics and Chemistry?  May not be absolute any more.  Read on here.

I'd think that was just refining 0°K more precisely. Now if it had been as much as an entire 1°K or more....

I think absolute zero is still absolute in the context of a closed system.  These states are only possible using large infusions of energy to maintain the metastable states.  The larger the "negative" temperature attributable to the heat energy of the metastable matter, the more external energy is needed to maintain it.

Sometimes I forget we have really bright folks who post here alongside those of us who are just a bit brighter than normal.

Temperature is at it's smallest scale basically the measure of the atomic movement. The more movement the higher the temperature right?
Well, absolute zero is simply the Theoretical lowest temperature that matter can reach. It's the point that everything is frozen. Theoretical being a key term here.
Absolute zero does not assume that the quantum mechanical zero-point energy has stopped (subatomic particle movement).
This experiment, from what I can tell, has stopped, or slowed this subatomic movement.
Since this movement is actually what ties gravity together (imagine the molecules spinning together like gears) then the gravity is disrupted.
Makes sense, sort of, when you think about it that way.

Interesting.  I don't know enough about thermodynamics to really wrap my head around exactly what they were doing there... my explanation would look pretty similar to what treelinebackpacker just noted, although I'm sure a true particle physicist would be quick to correct my misassumptions.

Still though, I think it's pretty cool. :)

You could also just avoid laser fields strong enough to stop your molecules.

What kinda wannabee doesn't buy a bag that will accommodate energy-sucking laser fields?  I think EN ratings account for that (the "warm, mid, extreme", and "sub-freezing-laser-field" rating).

Buncha yuppies, I tell ya'.
