"California public television icon Huell Howser has died, his longtime station said Monday, an announcement that set off a flood of heartfelt condolences from his fans in the Golden State and beyond."

"Huell elevated the simple joys and undiscovered nuggets of living in our great state," KCET said in a statement. "... Most importantly, he reminded us to find the magic and wonderment in our lives every day."

My whole family loved watching his shows - he will be missed :(

About the most friendly smiling laughing media person ever that could make even the shyest person, comfortable showing off their little piece of our world regardless of how ordinary that might be and actually make it interesting and them proud.

Thought it ominous a few weeks ago when it was announced he was stepping down from the show.  Though not explained yet, Huell likely had a terminal illness.

Rest in Peace and bless you my good man.  You have given much good to many.

avocado eatin' dog, lol - we lived in Escondido for a year when I was young and our house backed up to an avocado orchard, and yes our dog ate the avocados

I had my chance to meet Huell a few years ago when he came to Idyllwild - shoot

The guy got around to every little nook and cranny of the state, that's for sure - we've gone on many Huell-inspired trips as a family.  This link has a map of communities he visited...

It is very sad. He was such a cheerful, enthusiastic presence on television. He had a real gift for making the most random things completely fascinating.

I used to watch with my son when he was little. I remember there was a segment about, of all things, quonset huts; for years afterward, whenever we saw a quonset hut Max would point it out.

RIP to Huell; I loved his show when I lived out in California. I think my favorite episode was when he visited Death Valley right after a big rainfall.

I "grew up" watching Huell when he was a young newsman in Nashville.

Rest in Peace.

I agree with hbfa, Huell was a bit cheesy and campy, but I just couldn't help but really like him!

We'll miss him!

I loved the episode where he made is poor camera crew hike to the top of Half Dome with all of that gear.

He was a classic. You can't help but get caught up in his enthusiasm. I relate to him as a transplant from out of state.

My fav is the Mexican dashing across the border at 0:40.

That's hilarious

I also liked the portrait of Burt Lancaster
